How to get rid of toothache? Toothache at NIT Surat & IIT-Mandi. Natural remedies for toothache & dental problems

We have all experienced it. Excruciating pain in our tooth/teeth. It could be due to any reason for eg. tooth decay, cavity formed in teeth or some other possible complications.

I would say one of the luckiest people on this planet would have never experienced tooth ache in their lives.

First let me list out all the possible natural remedies that I have tried:-

1) Gargling with luke warm salt water, specially during mild toothache & just after dinner. The water should be at tolerable temperature for the insides of your mouth. In a glass-full of water, mix around 1 table spoon of salt. For best results use natural salt in granular form. If natural salt is not available use processed salt which you use for cooking.

2) Cleaning the teeth & cavities with brush & then munching/chewing tender neem leaves & keeping the saliva/juice in mouth for atleast half an hour. This procedure should be done at least 4-5 times a week just before going to sleep at night, if not daily.

3) Chewing on cloves.

4) Apply a paste made from mustard oil(rai/sarso ka tel) mixed with salt
onto your teeth. Close your mouth & keep the paste inside for alf an hour. After this you can clean your mouth & gargle with water.

5) In cold regions where there is snowfall, you can use a plant called Tirmira or Taramira. It has thorns on it's twigs & branches. You need to clean your teeth the way you clean your teeth with a neem twig(daatun). First get rid of all the thorns from the twig. Chew on the tirmira twig & keep the juices of the tirmira in your mouth for at least half an hour.

The current lifestyle of most of the urban crowd does not exhibit the required discipline to keep one's teeth in healthy condition. Apart from the lifestyle it's also about the lack of interest shown by the parents in inculcating the need to keep the teeth, mouth clean. Taking pain to get the habit of oral care enshrined in yourself by self discipline or in you kids at an early age is a facet which people lack, in today's era. It is all about basic discipline. No herculean efforts are required to keep the teeth clean. Brushing your teeth twice a day is all that is required. Not to miss out on cleaning your teeth before going to sleep. The unhealthy eating habits do not help in any way, though. The fast food consumption of the masses has increased. The food stuff which causes the teeth to rot at a quicker rate are included in more quantity in the fast foods

It is absolutely imperative to clean your teeth before going to sleep at night. That's because let's say if you go to sleep at night 22.00 hours and get up in the morning around 06.00 hours; your mouth & hence consequently your teeth remain undisturbed for a period of 8 hours. Which means if you have not brushed your teeth properly, the food particles embedded in the cavities or stuck between your teeth remain undisturbed for approximately 28,800 seconds or maybe even more. They rot & thus bacteria can feed on the food particles stuck to your teeth. In the process the bacteria keep burrowing further to deepen or increase the size of the cavity by gnawing the food particles and eating up parts of teeth in the process.

I had a horrible toothache when I was appearing for the final papers of my Engineering. The pain was really bad. It used to distract me from studies.

The worst part about a toothache is it renders you absolutely useless to d time the ache persists. Your system & routine are absolutely paralyzed. The constant nagging pain, is accompanied with a headache as well. And all you can do is either go to a dentist or wait for the pain to subside. Living with the pain every second, at least for a couple of days, is very difficult. It is not advisable to take pain killers, though when the pain is very bad most of the people do consume painkillers.

When I was in engineering, I did not want to our could not go to the dentist for 2 reasons. First reason was the expense. Second was the painful dental procedures. I found it really weird. The very thought used to bring in a lot of pain, that to relieve you of the future pain during the dental procedure to be done by the dentist, the dentist would inject painkillers in your teeth. I mean someone will use an injection to drive anaesthesia to deactivate the pain sensing nerves. And that injection will be given in my gums? What the hell? To alleviate future pain i have to go through seemingly acute pain, that too by getting injected in the gums. Is there not an easy remedy? Can I not be knocked unconscious via a general anaesthesia and then the dentist performs all the dental procedures while I am lying unconscious? That's how operations are carried out, is it not?

So these were the reasons or possible insecurities because of which I did not/could not visit a dentist. Coming to the remedial procedures which helped me survive, slowly but surely,  and get rid of the pain during that time.

There were  some neem trees in NIT SURAT campus. I used to pluck a lot of neem leaves, first clean the cavities of my teeth and brush my teeth after anything I used to eat and then I used to chew a mouthful of tender neem leaves. Keep them(crushed neem leaves and it's secreted juice) in my mouth for a while and then swallow them. The crushed neem leaves used to remain stuck in the cavities the whole night. I continued this till a month or so regularly. I got relief from the tooth ache and my teeth/gums became healthy. Then I used to munch neem leaves at night before sleep (after brushing my teeth & cleaning the cavities) a few times in a week. This stopped the decay process of my teeth.

For instant relief from pain, I had used a gaujharan ark which I got from Sant Shri Asaramji Bapu Ashram in Surat. It used to be concentrated at that time (2011). I took a mouthful of gaujharan ark, gargled with it for a few minutes. The herbs used in the preparation of 'ark' were really good. It used to give a burning sensation to the insides of my mouth while I gargled & I used to get instant relief from the tooth ache. I used to use gaujharan ark for instant relief then munch on the neem leaves. I had tried multiple mint flavored mouth wash's which my friends had, but they were of little help. Cloves also did not seem to work. I had tried many things. I stumbled upon 'gaujharan ark' and devised this munching neem leaves at night(in 2011) by thinking deeply about the mechanism of tooth decay. We really need to protect our teeth from decay at night because during the day we keep eating or drinking at regular intervals. So the same food stuff may not be stuck in the same cavity for a long duration as other, subsequent food particles may dislodge the existing food particles, when you eat again after some time and get stuck into the cavities themselves. Whatever is stuck now could be replaced by some other element that's getting chewed on when you are eating again after a few hours. So the damage is not done or maybe decay is not caused to that extent.

Apart from this you can use mustard oil(sarso/rai ka tel) with salt. Make a paste of this oil with salt. Apply it on the teeth, your gums & fill it in the cavities of your teeth.(I used to pray to god also. I used to look at this paste after preparing it and then chant "Om namo Narayana" 21 times & then apply it on my teeth & gums, so that apart from the medicinal property of this paste even God's blessings are showered in the paste. "Hey Bhagwaan! Help me. I don't want to visit a dentist").

Then you need to keep your mouth closed, with the paste applied on your teeth, for at least half an hour. Keeping mouth closed ensures that the gases formed as a result of reaction between the oil and the salt remain in your mouth, act on the bacteria & the effect is not diluted.

The neem munching process & applying oil with salt process absolutely stops the tooth decay. In places where you can't get neem, you can try clove - but you need to do it regularly.

Take 3-4 cloves, after cleaning your teeth and cavities, and chew them. Make sure these chewed-open cloves are stuck in the cavities of your teeth. Don't swallow them & go to sleep. In the morning when you brush your teeth you can spit them out. Before eating anything in the morning, you can chew some cloves and deposit the chewed cloves in the cavities of the teeth before any food particle lodges itself in your tooth/teeth cavities.

I once had to spend some time at IIT Mandi in Himachal pradesh for some project work. The moment I landed in IIT Mandi - North campus I felt a toothache(I had become careless with oral care for sometime). I started looking for neem tree. But as it(IIT Mandi - Himachal Pradesh) was a very cold region there were no neem trees. From the locals(staff and security guards) I got to know they used a plant/tree known as Tirmira(local name). They used it to brush their teeth like we use neem twigs(daatun) to clean teeth in the morning. I got some Tirmira from the security guards whom I had befriended on the IIT Mandi - North campus. The first time I chewed tirmira I felt a slight burning sensation. It reminded me of the 'gaujharan ark' and my old Engineering days in NIT Surat. I used to chew it at night for around half an hour, spit the juice out as I was not sure if the tirmira juice would be good or bad for my system if ingested. I used to swallow the neem leaves as I knew it with conviction that neem is good for our system. It cleans up and flushes our system. I was not sure about Tirmira. So i used to munch/chew Tirmira for half an hour and then spit out the juices/saliva. It worked well. I never had to seek a pain killer for my entire stay at IIT Mandi.

What I learnt at IIT Mandi, if you can't find neem at a place get in touch with the locals there explaining your toothache. There will be some equivalent of neem being used in that area by locals. You can use it. It is tirmira in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, neem in UP, Bihar, MP, Maharashtra. Other cities in South/Goa etc could have other substitutes/equivalents of neem/.tirmira India is so blessed with these herbs.

Anderson's hostile swing bowling @ Lord's Cricket Test Match India Vs England

After the first day's play being washed out, second day's start of play saw India lose 2 early wickets to hostile swing bowling from James Anderson. How will India's brittle middle order perform, remains to be seen... Cheteshwar Pujara was batting with Virat Kohli when rain stopped play again. Pujara had played 19 deliveries & scored 1. It's imperative that batsmen should not be too much bogged down by the match situation. If the fact that we need to hold up one end & not give wickets along with the fact that my place in the team is at stake, plays too much on batsman's mind, he will be nowhere near even his normal self, forget about being his best. Indian fans would be already missing the services of a swing bowler like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, mentally. Kuldeep Yadav has been picked along with Pujara. Whether they will be able to make telling contributions & push their team beyond the finish line for the victory, we will have to wait & watch to fin
